Pyrethrins

According to the EPA the group of pesticides called PYRETHRINS is the safest of all the pesticides used to kill fleas. It is not easily absorbed through skin and is rapidly broken down by sunlight and water. It is however, toxic to fish and birds and care should be made to not expose this product to rivers, streams and waterways as this can lead to problems.

This pesticide works by acting as a toxin to the insects nervous system, causing death. Most products also contain a product that prevents the pest from detoxifying the chemical thus making it work faster on the nervous system.

Pyrethrins are made from a chrysanthemum flower and can take up to 24 hours to kill fleas. The fact that Pyrethrins break down quickly in sunlight suggests there is little to no residual effect on the pet after it leaves your shop.

Permethrin

This group of chemicals is synthetic in nature, similar to Pyrethrins, but because of its structure has a longer lasting effect. It acts in the same way, as a neurotoxin, but is stronger and therefore acts faster to cause death in pests in a much shorter timeframe. Because it does not break down as readily in the systems of the pet or in sunlight it has a mild residual effect and may last as long as 12 days before it is completely gone from the pets body. This product MAY Build up in the body of the pet (or the person applying it) if used continuously.

Side effects

Side effects are more severe than Pyrethrins and include salivation, numbing and tingling of the skin, hyperactivity, burns and irritation to the skin. Also, inhalation can cause stinging, burning and irritation to the nasal passages, and allergic reactions similar to those of hay fever in certain individuals.

OVER EXPOSURE is possible and gloves and safety wear should be used when applying this product to prevent overexposure from occurring.

EYE IRRITATION is possible from most foreign substances including this group of chemicals.

Di-Limonene

Widely accepted as safe by MOST groomers, there are some things to consider when using this product. It is a citrus based pesticide which utilizes the citrus solvent action to kill pests such as fleas. Di-limonene is actually used in cleaners to cut grease, to remove adhesives, to dissolve PAINT. It will also dissolve the exoskeleton of a flea and then the flea cannot breathe, therefore it dies. While it is basically safe when used as directed, there are some reactions to Di-limonene in cats that make it unsafe unless care is used to follow directions EXACTLY!

Side effects

Allergic reactions include salivation and hyperventilation.  Also, mild to moderate skin reaction have been seen and are usually associated with improper dilution of the product per manufacturers suggestions.

ALWAYS follow the directions on these products, because more is not necessarily better!

EYE IRRITATION is possible from most foreign substances including this group of chemicals.

Dips Vs Shampoos

All of the above pesticides are available in both shampoos and dips. Dips are actually a liquid that is usually sponged over the pet, and not rinsed off.  This allows a stronger concentration of the product to stay on the pet and causing more side effects.

Shampoos are a safer way to go and the soap in the product actually helps to kill fleas as well as the pesticide by dissolving the fleas exoskeleton allowing the pesticide to penetrate faster and easier. Since we rinse this product off the dogs and cats it does not remain in contact with the skin and have a chance to absorb into the skin as easily, thereby reducing the dangers associated with exposure to the pet and the pets family as well.

The EPA has reported that children who come into contact with dipped pets or those wearing flea collars are TEN TIMES more likely to become poisoned by the product or ill as a result of contact than are adults or even the pet themselves.

REMEMBER that children touch the pet and their hands go into their mouths, creating a direct line of product ingestion. Repeated ingestion of dips may lead to build ups in their system, causing reactions, toxicity and possibly even DEATH!

Our customers trust us with their pet and we owe it to them and their pet to know what the products we are using can do.

If there is a better way we owe it to them and ourselves to FIND IT and USE IT!

I also believe it is our job to educate our clients as to why we choose the products we choose and how they affect the safety and health of their pet.

While the idea of protecting the pet and ourselves is critical to our way of thinking, it must also be a concern to us that the family of those we are caring for is safe.

Many of them have no idea that dips are toxic and can build up in their pets system leading to serious problems.

As professional they trust us to know what is best for the pet and we owe it to them to make sure we know.Whatever method you choose to use, be sure you can explain why it works, how it works and that you can live with the decision you make.
